I read this post over on Larisa’s Blog where she explores the novel concept (for me) of comparing in game training to gym exercise routines.
I really like this idea, for me deciding to roll on PVP servers is somewhat like this – in return for the pain of ganking and cross faction harassment I receive class skillz and knowledge. Stuff I would only learn through hands-on necessity… and as a bonus surviving day to day questing in contested territory at lower levels makes me feel all crafty-like.
When I was a kid all the mothers would congregate on weekends to walk what they referred to as the ‘torture track’ (it was fairly well know in the community by this name). The torture track was actually this extremely primitive BMX trail, carved outa mud and basalt granite and running fairly vertically up a hillside. Mothers would clamber up it seeking physical fitness and us kids would fly down it on bikes and various contraptions in a manic quest for glory … or death.
So pain CAN equal gain… for the insane.
Larisa points out that the Og’rila bombing quest (while painful to complete – ahh yes I avoid them too) really should enhance dodging & prediction skills (particularly when it comes to great flaming fel-fire balls that burn you off your mount.)
The do or die method – I love it! Come one, come all and get ya emotional scars. Scars = Honour people. Honor! You know you want it – RAH! …errr … yeah… cough … like sitting on the bloody farm flag while everyone else is living it up at stables on a four cap – that’s painful but honourable… feeling less rah now … sigh.
Places of pain that should be inflicted on trainee guildies or used to challenge friends:
The Netherwing race challenges / Blades Edge forge camps / Hostile cities in the outlands
– Flying License
The Isle of Quel’Danas
– Being a good citizen 101 … interesting apparently the latest trick is to shadowmeld on top of a quest-giver so that clicking hordies commit suicide by local law enforcement for delivering naughty love taps.
Murloc Territory (any appropriate level)
– Zerg workshops
– Situational awareness classes (bloody kaliri, warp stalkers and alliance)
Nagrand Sky Islands
– Duelling circles (aka welcome to fight club)
Zangaramarsh (Telredor Guards)
– Double Kiting Certificate
So anyone else have any other fun places to hurt train yourself and others?
